The History Of Green Tea

Green tea has a history that dates back thousands of years. Although this particular type of tea is only now becoming more infamous in the West, it has been known to the Chinese and Japanese for centuries. This variety of tea is less heavily processed than its counterpart made from the same leaves, but regardless of this fact, it has not been a heavy export from Asia until the past few years.

The recent increase in popularity of this tea is largely accredited to the many health studies that have exposed some rather big benefits that can go along with consuming this drink regularly. Although green tea still has a way to go to rival its black counterpart in regard to its popularity around the globe, it is certainly starting to give black tea a run for its money.

The exact time scale in which the tea’s popularlty soared in China is a matter of opinion. Some tea enthusiasts claim it reached the peak at about 3,000 years ago, others say longer. One legend is that green tea's history began around 2730 BC when the Emperor Shen Nung by chance, had some leaves from the Camellia Sinensis plant fall into his pot of boiling water and his accidental discovery is apparently how tea was born. The spread of Green tea from China to Japan is also a bit unclear. The rise of this variety in Japan has been credited to the Emperor who is assumed to have given the tea as gifts to monks in the 700s AD.

Whatever the real date of the tea's first discovery and use was, there is no question that this drink originated in China centuries ago and remains to this day a popular beverage.

The Green variety of tea has found itself being served and consumed in the western world for many years. It has, however, only recently become the ‘in’ drink with it suddenly becoming trendy to drink Green tea.

Green types of tea have also been a staple diet in Chinese and Japanese restaurants throughout North America for years. Only in the past few decades, has the green variety of tea taken precedence over the European markets. The increasing popularity of this variety in the West is largely down to the many health studies that have come to the conclusion that this form of tea can have extremely positive impacts on medical standing. Thanks to the light processing it undergoes, green tea is acknowledged to contain a high amount of antioxidants in its brewed form. These antioxidants have been proven beneficial for staving off cancer, heart disease and many other ailments. Recent studies out of the United Kingdom also show that the green variety of tea can help increase insulin sensitivity and even assist with weight loss, with calorie burning and fat oxidation.
