Meet Dr T, the world's leading expert on the health benefits of the UK's favourite drink.
During his medical study Dr T decided against a career in surgery and instead specialised in his number one passion – finding the perfect cup of tea.
He believes there is much more to making a cuppa than most of us understand and says many of us “burn” our tea. What's more he dismisses the typical British cuppa as “hot watery dust”.
Determined to prove that there is more to tea his quest took him across the globe to tea growers in remote areas of China where he sampled literally hundreds of teas.
But it wasn't just the taste he was interested in – Dr T was determined to find the cup of tea with the most health benefits. He believes tea has been overlooked as a remedy for many human conditions and illnesses.
Now his research has led to the development of his own unique blend – the Tava Tea Wellness Blend.
This blend combines Sencha, Puerh and Oolong tea, all known to have huge health benefits including aiding weight loss, reducing the risk of strokes, bad cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and, according to a study published earlier this year, some forms of lung cancer.
Tea comes in six species, all from the same plant, just processed differently. They include black tea, the most common tea in the UK with over 160 million cups consumed every day, green tea which carries significant health benefits, yellow tea slightly green but differently processed, white tea made from the very young tips of the tea plant, Puerh, a post-fermented green tea which can cost up to £10,000 for just 100g and Oolong made famous by celebs including Oprah Winfrey.
On his quest, Dr T has learnt a lot about tea, from how to make the perfect brew, to the optimum temperature of water for each of the five blends of tea and the huge health benefits tea drinkers can reap if they opt for green tea over their favoured black tea.
Here Dr T gives his top six tips for making the perfect brew:
