Green Tea Can Save Your Skin

Green Tea is renowned for being the miracle drink of recent years. It is believed to be a cure for everything ranging from stomach complaints to fatigue; it can alleviate rheumatoid arthritis and help stop tooth decay. People in the Far East have turned to green tea for relief from various ailments for centuries, so it isn't at all surprising that the beverage has become the remedy of choice all around the world.

Perhaps the most outstanding claim is that green tea can be valuable in the fighting cancer. A study carried out in 1994, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute showed that green tea dramatically halved the risk of cancer of the oesophagus in Chinese subjects by almost 60 percent. Additionally; a study at the University of Purdue found that because of its chemical constitution, green tea can also decrease the growth of cancer cells.

Laboratory tests were carried out; the polyphenolic compounds in green tea were tested and found to provide protection against cancer in mouse skin. Also, some successful experiments were conducted on human skin in the lab. The analysis conducted by the authors showed that green tea polyphenols have potential to zap cancer.

A scientist at the Medical College of Georgia, Dr Stephen Hsu, has done extensive research on green tea and its medicinal properties. Hsu discovered that the compounds in green tea known as polyphenols destroy free radicals, which have been known to induce cancer because of the changes they make in DNA. Fundamentally, the polyphenols kill cancer cells, while protecting healthy cells.

Dr Hsu and his team of researchers compared the growth of normal skin cells to the growth of cells that had been exposed to green tea polyphenol. The researchers were amazed to learn that the tea component rejuvenated dying skin cells. The reactivation was restricted to the epidermis, or outer layer of the skin. Dr Hsu is certain that the research will have a strong impact upon various skin conditions.

Therefore, it seems that Green tea could be used effectively in skin products to treat a variety of skin disorders, which could help enormously in the fight against skin cancer. It appears that green tea is especially effective in shielding the skin from sun damage which is a major contributing factor to skin cancer. Green tea could also be just as effective at treating a variety of other skin conditions, such as psoriasis, rosacea and ulcers.

Because alternative medicine is more popular now than ever before and with the promising research on Green Tea’s positive effects on health, it would seem that green tea will be even more frequently used as a skin care agent. Not only might it lead to younger, fresher and healthier looking skin, it may also help to keep skin cancer at bay and for the very fair-skinned amongst us and for anyone who has a history of skin cancer in their family -- it is a real breakthrough.
